Last night at trivia about a ton of pressure was dumped on me for coming up with a team name. When I got there I grabbed a different table than the one I normally sit in. So as I sat there enjoying a delicious friend chicken salad I overheard some dude on a date telling her about trivia and about team names. And he says "I can't wait to hear what the dude that sits over there (points to my usual table) comes up with. Because that's what he does - comes up with funny team names." So that was a nice little ego boast for me. And here I thought no one cared about anything I've ever done.

And so I go to work to help this guy out. He used the fact that he knew me as the funny guy to impress his date - can't let him down! And then another group sat down and were explaining team names to their new buddy. And they were talking about my Barbaro team name in reverent tone.

Way too much pressure on me and I tried way too hard on the team name. I went with "It hasn't been a good month for 600lb beast that made millions getting ridden by little men." A couple teams chuckled and I heard one team say that it was awesome, but I don't think too many people equate anna nicole smith and barbaro like I do.

So new name for tonight. Right now I like:
"I hope Anna Nicole donated her organs to science. And by organs I mean tits. And by science I mean Turner's sister."

Marc on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 at 2:58 PM

Spectacular new team name Phil. However, I don't believe you'll ever use it.

Bigworm on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 at 9:43 PM

What frustrates me with UK is they always come out flat and for some unknown reason we are disinterested in playing defense and locking down our men until we spot the opposition 15 points or so. After that, we come back and just kick ass....until we are tied and then we shoot ourselves in the foot or we just simply are no longer interested.

Jay - when are you performing at tap room?

This is when it is awesome to marry an accountant. Since flowers are over priced Abby gets pissed if I buy her any for vday. Since vday is a completely fabricated holiday that some stupid ass woman or a even more retarded man designated as "show your bitch appreciation" day, we don't celebrate it.

So I'm at BW3's watching UC get their ass handed to them again.... but I digress...

this commercial comes on, and I see these football players making tackles with a big "T" on their helmets (ah, that looks like Trinity). Its a gatorade commercial... ok, I'm following. Then they show these football players lifting weights, and in the background it says "Trinity" across the wall... WTF. This coach flashes across, he kinda looks like Beatty... holy shit! Then they show this bus pulling up to a toll booth, which looks like the entrance to the KY fairgrounds... and the sign has a "T" and an "X" on top. This totally has to be Trinity on a Gatorade commercial... then there is Bill Parcells... ok, totally random, but whatever... its the Shamrocks on a Gatorade commercial.

Guess what, I'm wrong... but if you saw the following commercial in a loud bar with no sound and you had about 4-5 beers, you'd agree:

Just got my TA critiques back from last year. This is why teaching is so frustrating, two different students, same class.
Student 1:"Barry was a nice teacher, however he tended to talk slowly and lose my focus at times because he repeated things that shouldn't have been and took too long to say one thing..."
Student 2:"Barry did a good job overall, I just think he needs to go slower when talking and explaining the material. I often felt the class was rushed."

Anyone interested in seeing some upcoming concerts?

2/23 Heaven Hill (formerly Breckenridge and Element H) at the Hill.

3/1 Sevendust at Coyote's, unfortunately.

3/11 Powerman 5000 and Flaw at Headliners.

I could be talked into seeing Black Label Society 4/3 also at Coyote's.

All should be good shows, and if not, at least the crowds at PHT and Coyote's should be worth a laugh.

Phil, do you have any asp.net books on design patterns? Also have you ever used visual source safe?

Phil on Saturday, February 17, 2007 at 6:38 PM

I'm using Visual Source safe right now. For what you are doing though I'd highly recommend using SourceGear's Vault. It is free for a single user and is much more powerful than SourceGear. Plus it can be used over http. You can get it here.
http://www.sourcegear.com/vault/index.html

As for ASP.NET books on design patterns I don't own any. I can highly recommend Head First Design Patterns. While it is targeted towards Java design patterns really apply to any OO language. I've also read some good things about Design Patterns in C# and .NET Patterns: Architecture, Design, and Process.

The big problem with VSS is that everybody seems to have their own set of "best practices." Other than that it's pretty easy to work with. Just check files out when you need to work on them and then check them back in when you are done. This site's tutorial doesn't look too bad, but it does get into shit like running it from the command prompt that you probably won't have to do:

Wes, the preview just dealt with them confronting creepy Mr. Bennet (the cheerleader's dad, for those who don't watch the show regularly). Wes, I was thinking the same thing about Peter. And it was good to see stan the man in an episode, considering the show pretty much owe its existence to him.

informal survey:
for any service that you need to pay monthly (e.g. telephone, cell, cable, etc), how are the fees done? The way our billing is being set up is that we are billing people every 30 days which seems fair enough. The problem is that we have people that want to be billed every 365 days. The math gets weird because we write everything in terms of "cost per month."

Now the way that makes the most sense to me is that you are billed a fixed amount every month on the same day (e.g. if you signed up on the 15th then you are billed on the 15th of every month). But the more I think about it if you sign up for a $600 a month service you are paying $21.43 per day in February and $19 a day in March. Doesn't exactly seem fair, but it seems that's how everything else is charged. I guess it does even out over time.

CAVEAT: I have gotten about 40 hours of sleep over the past 9 days so math could be wrong and this could make no sense. But just about every one of you sons of bitches are business or math people so bring the noise.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070222...olossal_squid_4

and it weighs almost a half ton.

Bigworm on Thursday, February 22, 2007 at 9:43 AM

Phil, sounds like your terms are : Net 30 days which is pretty much standard in any industry I have worked in and for personal billing.

I can't say for everyone, but I know I like monthly break down for bills so they have a fixed payment each month (easier for budgeting purposes especially for businesses). Garbage and water bill every 2 months, everything else for Abby and I are monthly.

Phil the simplest way to do so, would be to bill your monthly rate times the number of months and that should be fine to do, unless your customers want a daily detailed billing statement. Which then the easiest way is: (monthly bill rate x # of months)/365 days per year. Of course if you need to incorporate any kind of interest for your "carrying cost" or your finance charge you simply incorporate the multiplier of (interest rate+1 or 2%/365 days) in order to keep it simple or you can use the compounding interest formula of: ae^rct

where:
a = amount
e = 2.71828182845
rc = rate of continuously compounded interest
t = time

Simple interest calculations work just fine, however, if you do the compounding interest formula you can squeeze out a few more bucks out of your customers...without them even knowing.

Of course, if people are wanting just 1 annual bill they might be hoping you guys also are willing to drop their rate down a couple percents because you should save money for processing time, stamps and other misc. costs by having to pay someone to do this job 12x per year vs. 1 time a year. That is something I wouldn't offer, unless they were die hard wanting to do that simply because you are saving a few bucks off the total bill....and let's be honest you guys are going to have to take the time to re-write your billing process which probably costs more money to do so when you compare the time and the wage of the developer vs. the time and the wage of office personnel to stuff an envelope and lick a stamp.

Phil, excellent satire. The poster right after you stated almost the same thing, but I'm sure they didn't catch your drift.

The topic is actually a very unique ethical topic, but condoning teenage sex is not one of them.

I love how you can tell where priorities lies with the commenters:

1. SOCCER MOMS - "I don't want my child FORCED to do anything" - I'll just FORCE them to play soccer.

2. CONSPIRACY THEORISTS - "This is the government's way of CONTROLLING us!" - Yup, that's Big Brother, right there, in the cure for cancer.

3. BIG BUSINESS HATERS - "This is just a money-making scheme by Merck!" - Well, if I was going to screw the American people out of billions of dollars, I think I could handle curing cancer as one of the side effects.

4. SINGLE DUDES WHO DON'T DRINK ANYMORE - "::random witty comment mocking one of the above groups::" - Smirnoff Ice rules!

You guys need to conduct a NattySci membership drive. You could call it the "Blitz for Bloggers" or something, and only give invitations to shallow college girls out at bars on the weekend (aka, Phil's kryptonite). Let them post for a month, you guys lie in wait and then own them. I would certainly be up for some light reading on topics like: Beyonce and Jay-Z will they make it?, Who is hotter, Gianniny or Palacios?, is Estee Lauder or L'Oreal overnight restorative cream more beneficial for closing up my open pores?, Where is the best place when tailgating at UK football games to pass out drunk and get a train run on you in the back of beat up Bronco by most of the pledge class of the Farmhouse fraternity?, and to round out the geography portion of the posts, which is better, Panama City or Daytona Beach for tanning and spring break fun (could be a fun point-counter point kind of thing).

Phil, make the magic happen and make it easy for them to embed thumbnails for Jay's sake. See you next month I got work to do...and when I say work, I mean sex.

Bigworm on Monday, February 26, 2007 at 11:36 AM

All I can do is laugh when I watch my CATS. The losses don't hurt nearly as bad as they use to. The problem is UK, beats itself.

UK-Vandy Game Stats:
Kentucky

FG%: 33.3%, 48.4%, 41.4%
3PT%: 26.7%, 33.3%, 30.3%
Rebounds: 28
Turnovers: 13

Brock on Monday, February 26, 2007 at 12:13 PM

Brock on Monday, February 26, 2007 at 12:13 PM

Dave, NFL.com has some little synopsis blogs and stuff. I'll see what I can come up with that's a little better. Basically what they have is 40 times, vertical heights and things of that nature. That's where I got the Kolby Smith info from.

stew on Monday, February 26, 2007 at 2:39 PM

Also you can try gbnreport.com, I have found it is a very good site for all things draft related.

Church on Monday, February 26, 2007 at 3:09 PM

Smith had the fourth best vertical jump and tenth fastest 40. Has anyone heard anything about Michael Bush's draft status

Brock on Monday, February 26, 2007 at 4:16 PM

They are now making online RISK tournaments... my life is over.

stew on Monday, February 26, 2007 at 4:44 PM

Because he really can't do anything, Bush's status has really suffered. He's slipping towards 3rd round territory, which is bad for him, but good for any team that picks him. I really think it would have been in his best interest to stay at U of L for one more year, however I understand that he doesn't want to get hurt again and those insurance policies are really expensive. Another 1st team Big East and probably a 1500 yd plus season would've put him in the high first round next year though.

Bigworm on Tuesday, February 27, 2007 at 10:12 AM

Yeah, so the thing is what does the Hatian do with the memories? Do you think he can implant them back in people?

Jay on Tuesday, February 27, 2007 at 10:27 AM

That is a good question. I'm guessing there is a lot he can do. Besides stealing memories, he can obviously read minds, and he also seems to block other psionics. As far as planting memories, it's a toss up.

Brock on Tuesday, February 27, 2007 at 11:10 AM

I hope you are shorting stocks Wes.

Bigworm on Tuesday, February 27, 2007 at 11:22 AM

Bigworm on Tuesday, February 27, 2007 at 11:27 AM

Brock, what the hell is shorting and covering?

Brock on Tuesday, February 27, 2007 at 11:40 AM

You short a company when you think the stock price is going down, and then you cover it for a lower price and pocket the cash difference. Its a way to make money in a Bear market, which is happening right now.

Bigworm on Tuesday, February 27, 2007 at 11:42 AM

Okay, but how do you short in this game. When I try to, it tells me to sell long before I short.

Brock on Tuesday, February 27, 2007 at 11:46 AM

You can't short a stock you already own. You have to sell your shares in that stock before you can short it. If you own the stock, you are in a "long" position because you want it to go up as opposed to a short position where you want the stock price to fall.

I know this belongs in the Natty Politics post, but fuck you all, I'm drunk and celebrating the non-20 loss season:

John McCain is announcing his candidacy for president in 2008. Here's a strategy:

McCain enters the primary as the primary Republican candidate.
Obama enters the primary as the main candidate with Hilary for the Democrats.

Right in the middle of the primaries, McCain and Obama announce they are running-mates as Independents. This puts two of the most prominent politicians who are reasonably middle-of-the-road on the same ticket. They don't have to run in a primary for the general election, so they immediately begin their campaign. But... and here's the jackpot...

They fuck both the Republicans and Democrats by taking out their two main candidates.

The opposition to Obama-McCain is Clinton-Edwards and Giuliani-Romney... come on... no competition.

This is the brilliant strategy that will put Burket-Douglas in the Governor's seat of Kentucky in '15, Goodloe-Church in the Presidency for '24 and Smith as Messiah for eternity.

adrian on Friday, March 02, 2007 at 9:38 AM

Phil, about your bike question. You would probably want to get a mountain bike for your first bike. That way you can go off on trails or even rise it on the road.

As far as brands, you can go into any bike shop and ask for assistance. They will get you set up on the right size bike for your height and build. I have a cannondale which was around 700.00. I bought the previoius years model on my bike so i got a better deal than spending 900.00 to 1000 clams. A local shop worker can help you out with the best budget to fit bike your you.

Treks, Fisher and cannondales are all nice american made bikes. If i was a big timer like you and making all of the bucks, i would slap about 3500.00 down on a Santa Cruz. Bitches love that shit.

As far as mountain bikes, you want to have at least front shocks, which i think all mountain bikes are standard with that. There is a hard tail (no rear suspension ... shocks) and rear suspension bikes. Rear shocks have some give on the terrain but will weigh just a little more than a hardtail frame.

If you want a road bike, then i would recommend cannondale. They make really good road bikes at descent prices.

Anything going on this weekend? I got my braces on so barring my teeth hurting I am down for something.

Brock on Friday, March 02, 2007 at 11:02 AM

Woah! You got braces?!

stew on Friday, March 02, 2007 at 11:07 AM

Phil, keep in mind that if you buy a frame only, you still have to add all the components. You're gonna end up spending at least another grand on a wheelset, drivetrain components, shifters/brakes, and then all that good trash like handlebars, stem, seatpost, etc. Then you still have to put it all together, which can take some time and alot of tools that most people don't have. You could get it assembled at a local shop (which would probably be the best idea) but that would probably cost a few $$ as well. I thought about building a mountain bike once, but it usually ends up costing more than buying something equivalent that's already built.
Which brings me to another point. As I am going to Iraq for the next 7-10 months, I will not be using mine. It's a few years old and probably in need of a little tune-up, but I had alot of good XC fun on it and if someone wants to use it, I'd rather that then it sit in my garage. I'm probably going to buy a new one when I get back anyways (if I still have legs!)
Anyways, if anyone's interested give me a call or something, but I leave for Cali tomorrow.

Bigworm on Friday, March 02, 2007 at 11:09 AM

Yes, I did.

I am also going to an oral surgeon for an additional procedure so I will only have to wear braces for 6-8 months, instead of 12-16 months.

Phil, if I were you I wouldnt spend more than $400 on a mountain bike, chances are, you wont even get into it that much. If you do, then great, ride the cheap one for awhile, get a feel for the sport, then when you're ready and you know you are serious, spend some more money.

If you're getting it free, wtf are you worried about? It aint a huffy with a banana seat, just get it and ride it. If you don't know your size, go to schellers on preston or bike shop in st. matthews, pretend you're interested in a bike, have them fit you, let you test drive a couple and then say, "Ill think about it." While you're there test a couple road bikes too, I would suggest getting a trek 1000, its the cheapest decent road bike for like $700 and will supply you with all your needs to see if you even like riding on the road. Cannondales are pretty expensive, you can't even look at one without dropping around $1500.

UK and Florida play Sunday at noon.

joe on Friday, March 02, 2007 at 7:42 PM

My cheap bike I bought for about 200 bucks has done me good. I've put good miles on it and decided I will get my money's worth when I decide to get a good bike. Plus I am not scared to get like 6 feet of air because if I break my bike oh well, it isn't an expensive bike. I'm more scared of breaking my body.

joe on Friday, March 02, 2007 at 7:42 PM

anyone doing anything call me or cuban

Wrecking Crew on Friday, March 02, 2007 at 7:46 PM

But, only get a cheap bike if you're not a fatass like me. You run a serious risk of breaking something...the bike or yourself.

Wrecking Crew on Friday, March 02, 2007 at 7:47 PM

Joe, are you stealing wireless internet?

Wrecking Crew on Friday, March 02, 2007 at 7:47 PM

Has the ringing in your ears stopped?

joe on Friday, March 02, 2007 at 8:33 PM

I am at mark's and we just bought tickets for met- yankees at shea and mets-red sox at the Bronx. Cost is undisclosed.

Phil on Friday, March 02, 2007 at 10:54 PM

Oh, if I was paying for this I'd go cheap bike. But these guys are willing to build Wade and I whatever we want (within limit). And honestly I think these guys like bikes so much that they get a kick out of putting these things together for us. I think I'd hurt their feelings if I said "oh, just send me a huffy. k thnx"

Right now it's looking like the Salsa Dos Niner (http://www.speedgoat.com/product.as...0&brand=216) and the Rockshox Reba (http://www.speedgoat.com/product.as...0&brand=211) for the fork are the front runners.

So anyone have any experience with any other components that you'd recommend?

adrian on Saturday, March 03, 2007 at 12:32 AM

Brent, what kind of deal can you get on a Baume & Mercier?

Bigworm on Saturday, March 03, 2007 at 10:03 AM

Philco - here is your chance to get an awesome bike. I'd go for it.

Brent on Saturday, March 03, 2007 at 10:57 AM

I can't really get a deal, its my mom who gets the deal, she works at Gumer.

Adrian, you can take a quick peak at my soon to be newest collection...

My two favorites are the B & M capeland and the Omega seamaster series

Brent on Saturday, March 03, 2007 at 1:54 PM

They are on backorder right now, so as soon as the swiss stop invading other countries and start making watches again.

"I fucking hate tuscan mules!"

Dave on Monday, March 05, 2007 at 1:31 PM

Wes, have you heard anything on the UK message boards about what Bradley said to Noah to get him so pissed off? There was some stuff in the paper about the incident and how the refs told Donovan that he better pull Noah out of the game before they kicked him out. All I know is the in a interview Dickie V, was quoted as saying that Donovan told him that the NBA scouts were making a big mistake by thinking that Noah was better than Horford. That he would take Horford anyday over Noah. I was just wondering if Bradley maybe brought that up?

Bigworm on Monday, March 05, 2007 at 2:12 PM

I don't know what Bradley said to Noah, however, I know when Noah fouled Bradley on that three pointer that Bradley was upset that none of UK's bigs said anything to Noah. Bradley is mad because UK isn't tough, and he has every right to be in my opinion.

UK desperately needs another Jamal Magloire.

Wes, not that I'm a Coulter fan but I saw a footnote on CNN last night about that and apparentlt CNN or somebody approached her about that and her response was, no shit, "Oh c'mon. It was a joke. I would never insult the gay community by saying that they're anything like John Edwards."

jen on Monday, March 05, 2007 at 3:35 PM

are you already hating your job Adrian?

adrian on Monday, March 05, 2007 at 3:49 PM
