Day One Recap

After day one, Joanna has a commanding lead in the Natty Sci bracket.  And in second place are fifteen brackets thrown in by Kellie.  We'll see how Joanna does with big upsets picked for Friday including wins by Northern Iowa, Western Michigan, UL Lafayette, Richmond over Wisconsis @ Wisconsin, and Murray State over Illinois.  More and more I'm wishing I took Murray State over Illinois.  The Fightin' Illini barely beat WKU last year, and Murray State only suspended Brown, who has already been suspended once this year and Murray State did fine.

Mindy gets the nod for the crazy ass pick of the day yesterday with Texas-San Antonio over Stanford.  She obviously saw something in her months of research, as Texas-SA hung around until about ten minutes left in the game.  At which point they got their ass handed to them.  Mindy does have a bracket @ 140 points though.  Brock is also at 140 point with his "no upset bracket" in the alternative Natty Sci groups.

Anyone else representing with bracket's not listed?

The other one was just way to long, so I created this. Hooray!

Phil on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 6:22 AM

Wow, we are at over 1400+ comments by my count.

Joanna on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 6:31 AM

I really can't brag....I randomly picked upsets. It would be pretty funny if some of them in the next round actually happened. Shocked me to see Manhattan beat FLA.

Brock on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 7:00 AM

I've got one bracket: I'm doing with my family that looked pretty good yesterday, but the Michigan St and Charlotte losses will cost me later. But I'm still beating my dad:
who picked Mississippi St and Gonzaga in the Nat'l Championship... ulzhiemers!

Phil on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 7:02 AM

This link will work for Brock's bracket:

If you are viewing your own bracket, they use entryIdFrom in the url instead of just entryID. I got no idea. So if you are posting a link to your bracket, delete "from" from the url.

Phil on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 7:03 AM

Oh, and if the url has this in it: entryIDFrom=someNumber delete that too...

It should look like

Brock on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 7:08 AM

Everyone needs to help out the local cheerleaders and vote in the Cheerleaders Challenge:
Notice who they've matched up. Do me a favor and actually look at the routine before you vote. UC looks pretty impressive.

Phil on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 7:13 AM

Lynnie get the "oh, fuck me and the horse my bracket road in on" award of the day for taking Arizona to the finals. He can already only get 1,370 points. The guy who won it all last year had 1,500 points.

Mindy on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 7:33 AM

HEllo! isn't stanford known for its academics? You always go with the ignorant school....Hello-Dumb JOcks= my new plasma screen.

I stand by my picks... And the Quarter that I used to pick them.

Brock on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 7:45 AM

I have a request! Can you put the UC symbol up there with the UK and UofL. It would be cool if you put Murray St up there too, just b/c we are all going to cheer for them, and this may be their day in the sun.

Brock on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 7:49 AM

Sorry, I should have tacked this on the end of the last comment, but I'm too pumped for today!

Is there a consensus on viewing the UofL game tonight. I'm definitely coming in town because I can't stand Xavier fans. BW3's on Bardstown sounds cool, I've never been, and Michelle is nutso about BW3's... or is it the beer?

I won't be in until 7 or so, but I recommend Church and Marc go camp out at a table. Shut up Marc, you don't really have a job! Be sure to bring your purse, Church, to save seats with!

Bigworm on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 7:56 AM

For the record, when I called Michigan St. a sleeper, I didn't mean for them to be asleep in the final 7 minutes of the game (3 points in last 7 minutes = Loss). Here at work I am still looking pretty good though, I am in the middle of the pack, however, with the games that I missed I had all those teams losing next game anyways. My Sweet 16 is still intact!

Church on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 8:34 AM

The following teams piss me off: Seton Hall, Texas Tech, and Nevada. Who the fuck is Nevadad to beat Izzo. FOr the record I will be at bw3s tonight, but I have no idea what time.

Church on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 8:38 AM

Anyone else think DOnovan will leave FLorida after another early exit

Brock on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 8:46 AM

Nevada is the only one who screwed me, but I think I did pick them in my Miracle bracket, but thats worthless since my title team, AirForce, blew it last night. What the hell is wrong with Taylor Coppenwrath (that's a pretty cool name, a merge of Copper and Wrath of Khan)? Vermont didn't put up much of a fight. Everyone knows Seton Hall was going to take out Arizona, and I wouldn't be surprised if they put the hurt on Duke. All of you whackos out there who picked Duke in the Final 4 are going to rue the day ("rue the day" who uses that anymore?).

Ok... I've been doing my scouting, and ETSU has no one taller than 6'7" on their team. Is that a perfect matchup for St. Joe's or what? Too bad UC gets to pound on them first. I'm going to be really pissed if that oompa-loompa running point guard for the Bucs cuts our defense. But UC will just clothesline that piece of shit (no below the belt shots, mainly because he's too short to reach).

GO UC, Murray, UofL, Florida A&M, and UAB!

Church on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 8:47 AM

I almost forgot, Brock you goat fucker

Phil on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 8:50 AM

St. John's perhaps? I doubt he'll leave, unless Florida asks him to take off. Florida was hurt pretty bad with losing Dreijer.

Check out this article about the Florida game:

"Christian Drejer had the right idea. Florida basketball wasn't worth the sacrifice. Drejer could have turned down $1 million to stay with the Gators, but for what? To go down with this ship? No, Drejer knew what he was doing when he bailed out in February to turn pro in Spain."

Church on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 8:51 AM

Well, if you all go to bw3s give me a call. I am really mad at taking Michigan STate to the final eight in one bracket since I thought they would make a run like last year. There will be an upset today, but it could be Murray, Northern Iowa, Lafayette, or Monmouth. Hell,I am pulling for FAMU.

Phil on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 8:56 AM

I still want to know how many pirates have ever been to Tennessee.

As for Vermont, they kept it close and might have even open up UConn for a loss. They went up 7-0 before Okafur had to guard Coppenwrath.

Other big white guys to note: the dude from BYU looked pretty good out there too. I didn't catch how many kids he had, but I believe they said he had one on the way.

And Seton Hall's coach looks like a black lurch

Brock on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 9:21 AM

Black Lurch: That's a good call with the Adam's Family reference. I can totally see it.

Wow... after reading that article, even if I was the most die-hard FL fan, I'd hate them. Can a team be a bigger bunch of pussies, premadonnas, and sissies? If I were Donovan, I would just boot the whole team, and start with all freshman next year. He might be able to put some kind of Fab Five together. James White took a little while to get the Gator-itis out of him, but Huggins doesn't put up with that crap long, and look how well he plays now.

Don't forget Sean Finn at Dayton. He's a big-ass goofball, but he looked good for a little while.

All-White Day 1 Tourney Team:
Gerry McNamarra G Syracuse
Drake Diener G DePaul
Paul Davis F Michigan St.
Taylor Coppenwrath F Vermont
Sean Finn C Dayton

Phil on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 9:29 AM

Davis had 16 points and four rebounds against freakin' Nevada. You have to go with Rafael Araujo from BYU. 24 points and 12 rebounds against the defending national champs.

For what that's worth.

Phil on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 9:30 AM

Church, I'll give you a call when I get in town about going up to BW3.

Brock on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 9:36 AM

Phil, what time are you leaving for Louisville?

Phil on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 9:40 AM

Don't know. Sometime between 2 and 4pm. Whever I can kick these clowns out.

Cheer-babes with behavior science degrees? This really must be the 21st century!

Brock on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 9:49 AM

You should meet me at the bar I'm watching the UC game at. Its on from 3-5, so you could eat some pizza and see what real UC fans are like.

Dude, she was born in 1985! Doesn't that make you feel really old?

Phil on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 10:03 AM

no. it makes me feal happy in the pants. ha ha ha just kidding mindy!

<earmuffs>for real, being a mormon must be awesome!</earmuffs>

Phil on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 10:04 AM

It's looking like I'll be stuck here till 4pm. What's the name of the bar though? Is it near the UC campus?

Phil on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 10:12 AM

Joanna is still in good shape with UL Lafayette within 4 with the half. Murray State was close, but it looks like Illinois is pulling away.

Brock on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 10:18 AM

Its the Fries Cafe (pronounced Freeze), and its like two blocks north of the campus:
I'll be there from 3-5:30, got my phone, give me a call.

Jay on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 10:23 AM

All I know is that I wanted syracuse to pound those God damn mormons into the ground, and they did.

Brock on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 10:32 AM

I was just informed that Trinity is currently playing in the Elite 8 of the KY State Basketball Championship. Those ESPN commercials with Agassi and Lance Armstrong have nothing on Brian Brohm.

Phil on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 10:36 AM

Actually, I heard the Trinity game just went into OT...

Phil on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 10:43 AM

I think Trinity just went into double OT. Mason County was last years State Champ I think.

Phil on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 10:46 AM

Mason County by two with 2:30 to play in the second OT. Trinity with the ball...

Brock on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 10:47 AM

I've found a live webcast, but its just refreshing the score, is there any audio somewhere Phil?

Phil on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 10:47 AM

Tie game, and Brian Brohm just took a charge with about 2:00 minutes to go...

Phil on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 10:48 AM

Just watching the score.

Phil on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 10:49 AM

Eeek, 41s. Tie game, trinity's ball...

Brock on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 10:51 AM

Do you think Pitino will try and get Brohm to play next year to replace Whitehead?

Phil on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 10:52 AM

Tripple f-ing overtime.

Brock on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 10:56 AM

Damn you Brohm, this ain't football, you can't just go out and run 'em over!

Phil on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 10:56 AM

Looks like Mason County is pulling away. Speaking of which, UL Lafayette and Murray State are still within striking distance...

Bigworm on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 11:10 AM

Brohm isn't big enough to play down low in college dude. If so he will "rue the day" (Just for you Brock!) Not to mention Petrino or the QB coach big Brother will let him. Besides wasn't Bush suppose to play both sports, does he?

Bigworm on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 11:10 AM

suppose to be "will not" let him.

Phil on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 12:34 PM

Ok State better get their ass together. What the hell was I thinking putting a big 12 team in the championship.

Phil on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 12:54 PM

The Redneck Pirates have closed the gap in the 'Nati at the half, and OSU looks like a big bunch of chumpgs.

Brock on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 4:36 PM

Go UC! Screw the oompa loompa! All munchkins can burn in hell!

Phil on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 4:45 PM

Brock, you coming down here? All the bars are PACKED. Give me a call if so, we can just get drunk at my apartment or something.

Kentucky can't stop FAMU. If they weren't unconcious from 3 point land, they might be in trouble. Or not.

Phil on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 4:52 PM

5 point game...

Brock on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 10:15 PM

Natty Sci is a bunch of posers! Way to come out and support the Cards! I was alone at the bars tonight watching UofL blow it. Maybe Church was out, but I blame the loss on the lack of support from all you sonsofbitches!

Church on Saturday, March 20, 2004 at 9:05 AM

Yeah I ended up at Mollie's and was damned pissed that some bastard Xavier fans ended up in the bar, they should crawl back in their holes

Bigworm on Saturday, March 20, 2004 at 9:41 AM

First of all, I will never support the cards. Go XAVIER!

UK had a complete lapse of defense in the first half, which if you are going to have it, let it be early in the tourney. However, I think in the 2nd half they did hold FAMU to 26 points. I don't know if I should thank Woods for being dehydrated or that they finally started playing a little defense. Not good defense, but atleast the contested shots. 3rd of all, atleast my team is still playing and UC did get by on a squeaker.

Brock on Saturday, March 20, 2004 at 10:57 AM

A squeaker = winning and still in tournament

I guarantee UK is going to have a squeaker or two in the tournament, and like you said, I'd rather have the lapse in defense or squeaker early rather than later. Thus, we should blow out both Illinois and Duke if this reverse physcology thing works.

Bigworm on Saturday, March 20, 2004 at 12:19 PM

Well Brock keep in mind, that it is better to have a lapse in defense to a 16th seed team instead of a #1 seed Team, i.e. DUKE! Talent wise UK, UC, and U of L are better than any 16th seeded team, so a lapse in defense while playing one of those teams is not as costly as it could be while playing an equal or superior team.

Mindy on Saturday, March 20, 2004 at 12:25 PM

Are the "kellie" entries, Kellie Harrison's, or is Scott Kellie (owner of the brackets) someone's friend whom I have not met?

Scott being Phil's last name/owner of the group-seems that info could have been..uhh..mixed up....

Phil on Saturday, March 20, 2004 at 12:50 PM

I wouldn't call FAMU running down the court and throwing up layup and three pointers out of no set offense much of a defensive lapse by kentucky. They looked like a less talented 1990 Loyoal Maramount out there.

Pretty good game plan really. The coach had to know Kentucky plays great halfcourt defense, so just don't let them get a chance to even setup.

Phil on Saturday, March 20, 2004 at 1:00 PM

A little more thought into the fact that Scott Kellie is burket's med school friend. I'm an idiot for not putting two and two together.

Listen people, if you are going to have two last names, make sure one isn't a chicks name.

kellie on Saturday, March 20, 2004 at 3:52 PM

phil, if you want you can put my last name on so there's no confusion with what ever you all were talking about. mindy spelled it right in her last post.

Phil on Saturday, March 20, 2004 at 5:05 PM

Kellie, do you have a bracket on there or not?

Jay on Saturday, March 20, 2004 at 5:11 PM

My bracket is totally f***ed!

kellie on Sunday, March 21, 2004 at 9:30 AM

phil, no i don't. i have never done a bracket and am not sure. maybe you could help me out?

joe on Sunday, March 21, 2004 at 12:31 PM

fuck murray state and UL they cost me the tournament!!!!

Bigworm on Sunday, March 21, 2004 at 1:42 PM

I hardly call running around and throwing up shots a great way to prepare for a team. Considering they have the best pure shooter in the game at the college level on FAMU's team you would think there would have been a lot of screens and double screens to get him the ball out of an offensive high post set. However, I am simply a chemist not a Division I basketball coach, so what do I know.
How can you not call it a defensive lapse, FAMU pushed the pace, however, the didn't fast break every time. You just have to stick to the basics in that instance and keep your man in front of you, play defense with your feet (which means move and take away the drive don't reach in), and contest shots! Did you watch the game, if not in the 1st half UK did not do any of the above mentioned on the defensive end, just to let you know.

Brock, what happened to Cinci today? I just turned the games on and they were getting hammered.

Bigworm on Sunday, March 21, 2004 at 3:25 PM

UK is definately out of sync today. They just look tired. I figure UAB by about 20 by the end of the game.

joe on Sunday, March 21, 2004 at 4:17 PM

no excuses!! Conference USA dominates UK!!! 0-4 in the last 2 years. All huge games too. UK cant run with the big dogs!!! UL twice, Dewayne WAde last year and UAB this year!! Just think if UK had to play ECU, houston or TCU.

Bigworm on Sunday, March 21, 2004 at 4:21 PM

Don't even get me fucking started on the UAB vs. UK game! I'm not one to fucking blame the refs but call it both fucking ways! The Eric Daniels 4th foul was huge, which would have been easily negated had the refs called the walk on the Jabroni from UAB!

All in all, I am very disappointed with the lack of showing from the teams in the Ohio Valley region.

So do we root for Syracuse to repeat, actually go for St. Joes, or say fuck it and drink?

Church on Sunday, March 21, 2004 at 4:26 PM

I am of course upset that the Cards will be watching the rest of the tourney, but at least they have company now since the Cats will be sitting at home as well and most of Eastern kentucky is now piss drunk and on a rampage. Oh and also, how about those bearcats getting spanked in their own home state.

adrian on Sunday, March 21, 2004 at 5:43 PM

Well, I don't see anybody beating Ok St now. The only team who had a shot on was Ky but now it should be smooth sailing for Ok. I would like to see St Joes go to the final but that won't happen. I guess now, I have to pull for the remaining SEC teams. UAB played a hell of a game and they can go fuck themselves. Roll Tide!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Jay on Sunday, March 21, 2004 at 8:02 PM

Brock on Sunday, March 21, 2004 at 9:05 PM

Sorry, despite the fact I puked a lot last night, I was still able to puke even more this afternoon. First off, when was it legal to sell your soul to the devil to shoot like that? It was like watching Pleasantville... who the hell shoots that well with people in their face? Now... since the Louisville CBS affiliate is a bunch of fucking idiots, I didn't get to see the whole game, but it wasn't pretty I imagine.

Despite the fact I was puking, UK decided to make me feel a little bit better by shooting themselves in the foot, and to a C-USA team no less. I'll speak no more of this because its been a dark weekend in the history of Ohio Valley basketball, with the exception of Xavier, but I'm not sure how to feel about that.

Church on Monday, March 22, 2004 at 4:54 AM

Oklahoma State will not win the tournament and will be lucy to get to the final four. Eddie Sutton's teams always choke in the tournament and I don't envision them getting past Pitt. By the way, Fuck Wisconsin. I try to be crafty and pick a dark horse final four team. Damn. UCONN has this tourney in the bag

adrian on Monday, March 22, 2004 at 5:08 AM

I just don't want Duke to win. I hate duke with a passion. I hate duke more than I hate all of Confernece Usa and North Carolina combined

Bigworm on Monday, March 22, 2004 at 6:14 AM

Roll Tide Roll!

Hey hats off to UAB! They played one hell of a game and what I was impressed with is they won the game with defense and not by fouling.

Almost fitting how the season ends for UK. The best clutch team in the country (was 7-0 in games decided by 5 or less), down by 1, and the best clutch performer had the last shot. All in all, I am proud of the Big Blue Nation.

Stockton needs to freaking transfer because he is not going to get any PT next year.

joe on Monday, March 22, 2004 at 8:15 AM

adrian, you just hate duke with a passion because that fag christian laettner fucked you in the ass and you took it like a champ without lubrication..need i say more?

Bigworm on Monday, March 22, 2004 at 9:40 AM

Everyone knows you always guard the inbound pass in that situation!
