NCAA Basketball

Ok, it is that time of year again.  The time of year when I spend way too much time on a bracket, only to decide that Vermont is fuckin' due.  And that anyone with a dude named Pittsnoggle is ok in my book.  So here's the bracket sign up info.

If you signed up last year and still know your ESPN.com username and password, just go here and create a new entry.  If not, you need a new account.  Once you have the created your entry, there is a button that says "Join a Group."  Click it.  Do a search for Natty Sci, and then click the results.  You should be able to see all the entries at this point.  Click "Join this group."  Finally, type in crazedbuffalo as the password and click Join this Group.

You can create up to 5 entries.  I think they only let you have 30 per group, so if you are going to create a bracket where you make pics alphabetically, don't add it to the group.

Brock on Friday, March 18, 2005 at 1:52 AM

Alright, so I was thinking about the eternal struggle occuring among Louisville fans at the moment:

1.) You hate KY, and cheer for whoever KY plays
2.) You hate UC, and they are a bunch of thugs/punks

Who do you want to win??

Breakdown choice - Cincinnati
Rationale - C-USA/Big East brother, and want to show up the SEC. UofL mans up and plays UC 2 times a year (how long has it been since UK played them). Finally, looking at the tourney challenge, most UofL fans chose UC over KY... so its a self-indulgent thing.

The only reason I bring this up is b/c I'm coming back to Louisville on Saturday and I would rather share the game with fellow cheers rather than constant nagging. Whose with me? Otherwise, I just may drive back to the comfort of the Nati faithful.

Bigworm on Friday, March 18, 2005 at 9:22 AM

Brock - although I agree with you, your post completely contradicts the article the courier-journal put together about a week ago.

Bigworm on Friday, March 18, 2005 at 9:26 AM

Chris here is Gonzaga's non-conference schedule

11/19 Portland State W 98-80 1-0
11/21 Montana W 78-62 2-0
11/24 Idaho W 88-74 3-0
11/27 at No. 4 Illinois L 89-72 3-1
12/1 No. 16 Washington W 99-87 4-1

12/28 at No. 3 Oklahoma State W 78-75 10-1
12/30 at Missouri L 63-61 10-2

Here is Louisville's non-conference schedule

11/20 at BYU Hawaii W 89-79 1-0
11/22 Iowa L 76-71 1-1
11/23 at Chaminade W 93-63 2-1
11/24 at Stanford W 82-67 3-1
12/4 Lafayette W 98-57 4-1
12/11 at Florida W 74-70 5-1

12/30 Eastern Kentucky W 78-63 10-2
01/2 Tennessee State W 98-64 11-2

To claim that U of L had a tougher non-conference schedule than the Zags is pretty silly.

Bigworm on Sunday, March 20, 2005 at 10:19 AM

The UC-UK game was one heck of a hard hitting game. The only way you could absorb more body shots is if you had 2 George Formans out there.

With that being said - Go Wildcats!

Brock on Sunday, March 20, 2005 at 12:13 PM

Even though I'd rather it come down to 2OTs like the subsequent game, I have to admit this was a fun game (despite the loud mouth comments of recently adopted UK fans). I think it all came down to who had the deeper bench. Like Wes' comment about a Foreman-style fight, 8-10 players can drag on a little longer than 6-7 players.

I only wish we could play this game more often. I say UK drops IU from the schedule, and UC drops SW Appalachian East St. for thiers.

Just remember the head is part of the ball:

sadly enough, in the free NCAA poll at work. I am in 2nd place so far, even though I chose Kansas to win it all and they got beat in the first round. I admittedly know nothing about NCAA basketball though.

First place is a girl whose chose based on mascots. "A wildcat can beat and eagle...as long as it's on the ground" that sorta thing. so she probably has the minutemen and the cyclones in the finals. (if they're even still in it, i don't know.

I just find it funny that everyone was making jokes about both of us filling one out, and we're winning.

Yes Brock, the head is part of the ball, like the body block Sparks received on the defensive end in the 1st half is part of the game.

Brock on Tuesday, March 22, 2005 at 4:01 PM

If you are using Sparks as your example of rough play, I feel sorry for you. He flops around more than a rag doll or BJ Flynn.

I accepted the fact long ago that other teams will be able to punch and mug the Bearcats while they get called for touch fouls by just looking at players. Its exactly the opposite for Duke...

Wes, did I say something last Thurs about the Zags to make you post that non-conf schedule? I don't care what their non-conf schedule was, they still suck and should not have been seeded higher than UL. THe Zags come from a piss poor conf, have made one good tourny run, and have been over-rated ever since.

Well I think I am officially out of the running with OSU going down last night. Damn you Salim Stoudamire! However, if UNC gets beat and so does Illinois, i might still be able to pull it out as long as UK wins.

And the buzz around work between the 2 UK fans and 2 UL fans here....a dream game championship game....wouldn't that be sweet.

Bigworm on Friday, March 25, 2005 at 10:13 AM

And I hope Bogut tries to get physical with my boys.

Church on Friday, March 25, 2005 at 10:40 AM

Bogut is very overrated. If anyone of his height played in a league where the average height is under six foot, they would be an all american

Phil on Friday, March 25, 2005 at 11:59 AM

i don't know. Bogut looked pretty damn impressive against Oklahoma. I doubt he'll be a good pro, but in the college game he's got quite a bit of skills handling the ball and finding his teammates.

Brock on Friday, March 25, 2005 at 12:18 PM

I am cheering for a UofL-UK championship game. Just so those assclowns who jerk UNC, Duke, and Illinois will shut up.

I agree with Church and Phil. He is over-rated, mainly because of the midget league he plays in, but he has stepped up about 3 notches since the tournament started.

Fact is, if you have a giant who can dribble and shoot, you are going deep into the tournament. However, UK has two giants they can use to mug the crap out of him all night, with an almost unlimited bench full of bodies. The downfall of Utah will be, as with pretty much every team this year against UK, is depth. UK just has so many people who can come in and play "head is part of the ball," that even relentlessly physical teams like UC get worn out.

Regardless... I'm cheering for UK to play Duke, unless Duke loses tonight. I want those pansies at Duke to take a physical beating like none other. Unfortunately, all the refs are in Duke's pocket and will call ticky-tac fouls against the Wildcats all night. Even with a bottomless bench, Duke shoots 80% or better from the line, UK will struggle unless Sparks sells his soul again (maybe Orbzut will loan him his).

Bigworm on Monday, March 28, 2005 at 9:22 AM

Well unfortunately Tubby can't take the shot for his players. He put the ball in his best penetrators hands and the wrong decision was made. If you ask Tubby, I am sure that was not what he was wanting to happen.

Bigworm on Monday, March 28, 2005 at 11:33 AM

Hello from Colorado and the Rocky Mtns, bitches!!!

Its freaking almost 60 degrees here, but sunny, and plenty of snow on the ground. High altitude rocks!

Bigworm on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 at 8:28 AM

I will drive me adrian and 2 others. If we need a 3rd room let me know.

Phil on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 at 9:20 AM

I can drive, and I'm for a third room. 12 people in two rooms sounds pretty fucking insane with the whole "taking a shower to wash the stench of dead hookers off me" issue

Jay on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 at 10:36 AM

Another room would be great. Is it too early to call shotgun in phil's car?

Marc on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 at 11:27 AM

11 people definite, one possibly one. i say. third room. six per room will be tight even with sleeping on the floor. depending on how much we drink, we might not want to sleep on the floor by the end of the trip.

other factors: jay notoriously lets off big farts while sleeping, adrian might leave a "man-stain" on the floor, brock ends up nude, and chris crawls to the door while drunk. therefore the fewer peopl these incidents have to happen to (or upon) the better.

Wrecking Crew on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 at 3:47 PM

I think consensus is 3 rooms, especially since we now have a total count of 13. (this is just the latest count. the way things have been going, we may have a small army by the time of the actual trip.) Rooms are still available on cheaptickets.com, and Joe is going to talk to Cuban and Bmac to see if they will reserve a room. If that doesn't work, Wes, I'll be giving you a call.

Once again...
Thurs- bill driving
chris, bill, scott, mark O., brock

Fri- wes, adrian, phil, jay, joe, b-mac and Cuban (now a definite)
Wes (4), Phil (3), or does joe need to take a car too?

Barry is #13 who will be driving down from Baton Rouge at some point during the weekend

Phil on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 at 5:19 PM

four people in my car will be pushing it. No one over 5'10" will be able to walk if they spend too much time in the back seat of the Jetta.

First one to throw up? The Wrecking Crew of course... or it wouldn't be a proper bachelor party
Last one to throw up? Jay.. b/c he won't drink half the time... for no reason
First one to pass out? Chris of course... who else passes out when drinking out of a pink cup with "lotion" on his face
First one to expose himself? Wes... just for the reason he keeps bringing up the underwear incident... better knock on wood Goodloe
First one to go to jail? Toughie, but I would bet on Joe... b/c he and his buddies get even more obnoxious than us, and with us around to instigate... he's doomed.
First one to get bailed out? I ain't bailin' your ass out... unless you punched a LSU fan.
First one to get into a fight? Depends on your definition... Burket and I drunk instigate a lot, but I would imagine Joe or his buddies to throw the first punch.
First one to bleed? Me! Why are you bleeding!?
First on to get stabbed? Phil... for trying to hit on too many waitresses.
First one to die of alcohol poisoning? Burket, with Phil running a photo-finish second.

Phil on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 at 11:31 PM

damn you brock. you know me too well.

but technically speaking, I'd probably take a knife defending a waitress that I befriended the night before.

alchohol poisoning is a myth, much like the female orgasm.

Phil on Wednesday, March 30, 2005 at 5:11 PM

I just had the vomit flavored jelly belly: http://jellybelly.com/Cultures/en-U...lavor+Guide.htm

One of the problems with the special flavor jelly beans is that they lack the appropriate texture to go along with the flavor. For example, while most people like the taste of buttered popcorn, they find the jelly bean equivalent repulsive. The reason? The kernel dissolves in your mouth, while with the jelly bean you must slowly chew through the thing. I think this throws the mind into some type of panic after years of conditioning towards the texture + taste of popcorn only being half way there.

Well, the vomit flavor follows this rule. While it does have the same smelly feet taste of vomit, it lacks the weird burning smell and feeling that only vomit and microwaveable pasta can provide. So while gross, it is tolerable.

This jackass goes to a podunk medschool in Mexico, and becomes a team fucking physician. I can't even get a goddamn resiencdy from a US medschool. Fuck it all!

Jay on Thursday, March 31, 2005 at 1:07 PM

I think you have some anger issues, Chris. Good thing drinking heavily doesn't exacerbate the situation, or else New Orleans could get ugly.

Wrecking Crew on Thursday, March 31, 2005 at 2:10 PM

It's fucking Guadalahara!!! I mean it might have been respectable if it were in Ireland...wait, no, it still fucking blows.

Drinking? I don't know what your talking about. Let's look at the calendar over the next couple of months...

Apr 1-4 - Last test at UL + UL final 4 appearance + Opening
Day MLB = lots of drinking

Apr 7-10 - Bourbon St = lots of drinking

Apr 15 or 16 - Bachelor party #2 in the 'Ville to take my dad
out on the town = lots of drinking

Apr 22-23 - trip to Atlanta for boards = lots of drinking

Apr 29-30 - weekend of camping (med student is the host all
else welcome) = lots of drinking

May 6-8 - Derby and that thing that happens the day before
(sorry Marc) + Joanna's sister graduates = lots of
drinking

May 14 - I'm gonna be a doctor = lots of drinking

May 20-26 - I'm gettin' hitched + honeymoon = lots of drinking

Then I might need to go into rehab for a month to sober up before I go learn how to cut people.

If anyone wants, we'll be lighting the grill sometime around 5:00 on Saturday, and watching the UL game at 6:07.

Phil on Friday, April 01, 2005 at 12:36 AM

chris, you can probably count me in for the grill. I'm not too sure about not watching in front of my TV, but they did pull out the win in the Liberty bowl at your place, so it isn't like your house is jinxed.

What kinda booze will be needed?

Quick trivia question...has any team in NCAA history beaten 3 #1 seeds en route to a championship? If so, who and when. Anyone who can come up with a correct answer will be my new hero, and the recipient of a complimentary jager bomb.

Phil on Friday, April 01, 2005 at 9:05 PM

i think arizona did it in 1997, stew. they beat kansas, then North Carolina and then UK in the championship

anyone planning on going to Team Trivia tonight at Flannagan's should know it starts an hour early this week only. It starts at 6pm.

P.S. team names about the death of The Pope might be to tasteless. We'd better stick to good ole masterbation jokes. just a thought.

Jay on Monday, April 04, 2005 at 12:12 PM

You could combine the two using the euphamism "Beating the Bishop"

Bigworm on Monday, April 04, 2005 at 12:12 PM

Marc are you crazy? An opportunity like making fun of the pope only happens every 20-30 years or so. I think you should take advantage of it right away and poke fun at him.

Just Joking of course.

Ok, since we are now counting down the hours until KB Day, has anyone checked out the local "entertainment" options?

Also, has anyone found a place where we can rent swamp boats? I plan on hunting down Swamp Thing and wrestling crocodiles one day.

Top Things to Accomplish in New Orleans:
10. Find a voo-doo guy to put a hex on someone
9. Instigate a fight with Adrian and Wes against some LSU fans
8. Instigate a fight with Burket and Phil against some Tulane fans
7. Wrestle a crocodile
6. Hook Phil up with a waitress... for real, not just stalking - might as well get him the starting QB job for the Saints while we're at it.
5. Burket drinks Beam out of a fishbowl, a barrel, and some jugs (the good kind).
4. Enjoy the company of Miss Louisiana http://www.misslouisiana.org/
3. Track down Swamp Thing
2. Drink my 2X my blood volume in liquor
1. Menage-a-tois Southern belle-style in the French Quarter

Also there can be possible copyright issues even though these are broadcasted free on the airwaves. thanks

(1) Just in time for the post-Easter candy sales. The History of the marshmellow Peep.

(2) The government wants to make money off your beauty. Introducing the all new plastic surgery tax. Whether for or against, if we had this in 1983 then Michael Jackson, Cher, and Joan Rivers could have saved social security alone... at least that's what I believe.

(3) Got trouble meeting singles and have money to throw away. Why not use Rent-a-Wingman. (Loss of self respect ensues.)

(4) Woman finds human finger in Wendy's Chili. It's less than a dollar, what do you expect?

(5) Video of Octopussies walking on two legs. (I know it's not spell that way, but YOU try to find a funnier way to type it.

(6) Racial slurs and a knife fight breaks out at a Staples office-supplies store, all because a customer asked the cashier to use his card as a debit and not a credit.

(7) What would it be like to get payed to play basketball as a career? but you had to lose everynight as part of it. This is what it is like for the players on the New York Nationals, who have to lose to the Harlem Globetrotters every night. I present to you, a day in the life of Gary Goldman.

(8) iPez: The PEZ iPod mp3 player

(9) A gay teen is upset that his parents refuse to accept his lifestyle choice so he does the only sane thing left to do... He climbs a tree naked with his gay boyfriend and performs sex acts for others to see before the police are called.

(10) Searching for Bobby Fischer? We found him. He was in a Japanese jail cell. They take chess very seriously.

(11) 3 big predators: Gator eats man, cougar runs lose in urban areas, and hundreds of sharks off the shore.

(12) The Flying Lawnmower: The perfect tool to kill random people or neighbors.

Its been a while since Natty Sci completely reunited, and its been even longer since we took a road trip. I have a feeling this will be an epic. The mere fact Burket is getting married is epic enough. Kudos to Joanna for slaying the devout bachelor.

jared lorenzen, back in the news:
The Giants wanted Jared Lorenzen, the extraordinarily round quarterback from Kentucky they signed as a free agent after the 2004 draft, to report to the off-season program at 270 pounds. To say the guy has had some weight issues is putting it mildly. He tipped the scales near 300 pounds while playing at Kentucky.

Hmm, 270. Lorenzen must have wondered: In which leg?

When he came in this spring, Lorenzen weighed 338 pounds.

Now, he has been making some progress dropping some pounds, but imagine the weight problem this kid has if he reports to what may be his last NFL opportunity 68 pounds over the weight the coach wants him to weigh. I imagine Tom Coughlin might have had some stronger words than that for Lorenzen.
